Responding to customer needs is Woolworths' first priority, and we appreciate it when customers take the trouble to let us know their needs or concerns.

The Woolworths policy on genetically modified (GM) foods was announced in December 1999 and was available as leaflets in our stores.

It is our policy to remove or replace ingredients derived from genetically modified crop sources where we can, or else label the final products.

We label products containing ingredients derived from genetically modified crops, for customer choice. Woolworths believes in always giving customers accurate and sufficient information about products, in order to make informed buying choices, and this covers not only GM but also indicating possible allergens, giving nutritional information, etc.

As further background, when determining the GM status of any ingredient, we look at the GM status of the original crop. It is our opinion that the customer is concerned about the process used to produce the crop, and not about what length of protein chain has to be present in a processed product, to still be deemed GM positive. We therefore do not subscribe to the notion that "GM can be processed out of a crop." So, for instance, we look at the GM status of the crops used to produce glucose. Glucose in South Africa is mostly produced from maize. And precautions had to be put in place at the South African producer to ensure that GM maize was not used to produce glucose, even though glucose will not contain protein, which can be verified via testing as GM or not.
