Dear Mr Coetzee
Bold Stance on
rBGH/rBST
As a milk
consumer I congratulate SAMPRO for their bold decision to call
on the South African government to ban the use of genetically engineered
recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH/rBST).
I am aware of scientific studies showing that rBST hormone use on dairy
cows increases the levels of naturally occurring Insulin-like Growth
Factor 1 (IGF-1) in milk, which in turn puts humans at a higher a risk
of breast, prostate, lung, colon and smooth muscle cancers. I know that
the European Union will not tolerate use of rBST based on their own
scientific studies of this product.
I am further aware that treated cows are at increased risk of rapid
ageing, stillborn offspring, joint problems, mastitis and consequent
increased use of antibiotics and that Canada banned rBST use for animal
welfare reasons.
I urge you to pursue the withdrawal of this unnecessary hormone so I
can start to drink milk with confidence.
Sincerely
_______________
